My Journey So Far

Community Interpreter

After several years as a stay at home mum, I realised that I wanted more from life. So, in 1991 with very few qualifications I took up an opportunity that utilised my bilingual skills and became a freelance interpreter for the local council.
This opportunity opened my eyes as to the difficulties communities faced through not being able to communicate effectively and having a lack of understanding the host culture.

It was the catalyst to my career progression.

Teacher Training for
Adult Education & Manangement

From interpreter I was offered a position at the local college to become a language teacher for which I needed to take a formal qualification. An opportunity not to be missed! This opportunity in turn taught me some very valuable skills which led me to become a senior manager for an interpreting service.

Several years of managing the service gave me deeper insights around communication barriers and cultural disparities.

MA in Intercultural
Communication & India

At the age of 40 I decided I wanted to get myself an education. With my wealth of working experience I was offered a place on the Masters programme at Sheffield University in Intercultural Communication. I graduated in 2007 and that set the tone of the rest of my career.

Straight after handing in my completed dissertation, which was based on ‘the Pillars of Culture’ I landed myself a job, in the field of Intercultural learning, which took me to India.

India was a beautiful experience, but not without its challenges! A 5 week posting stretched to 5 years!

Intercultural Trainer

Upon returning back to the UK I continued my work as an Intercultural trainer and continued to speak with a lot of people on cultural identity. It so transpired that the more I spoke to people the more apparent it was becoming that families with migrant parent’s, had and were still suffering in silence.

Over the decades I have recognised that challenges are still here, but with differing boundaries. With my own life reflecting many of the challenges being faced out there, the greater my desire to help silent individuals and communities face up to those challenges. To enhance & empower their transformational truths Hence the inception of Ordinary Extraordinary!.
